Area Veterans Give First-Hand Accounts of War Memories
On Friday, November 11, 2011, Prince Institute—Great Lakes in Schaumburg, IL, hosted a Veterans Day event during which local court reporters recorded and transcribed the life stories of area American wartime veterans as a part of the Veterans History Project created by the National Court Reporters Foundation in conjunction with the Library of Congress.
The event included opening ceremonies—complete with presenting of the colors by a local Cub Scout troop, singing of the National Anthem, and the gathering of 10 veterans and their families, as well as 10 court reporters who volunteered their time to partake in this event. Both reporters and veterans received plaques acknowledging their time, their sacrifices, and their stories.
“Court reporters are the guardians of the record,” remarked David Wynne, Senior Vice President, Sales and Education for Stenograph. “They take down the legal record, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them to take down the stories of the veterans and participate in such an important event in history.”
The Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.
Prince Institute has been training court reporters since 1976, and continues to expand its professional studies programs to meet the needs of today’s marketplace.
